ADA Approved CE Courses

The American Dental Association (ADA) requires licensed dentists to complete continued education (CE) credits in order to keep their license current and renewable. Courses are offered through certified schools and dentist training conferences. These programs work with the ADA to make sure their programs will qualify for CE credits. Dentists requiring CE credits can double-check the qualification of a course with the ADA.
  1. Infection Control

    • Taking courses in infection control is required for all licensed dentists before renewing their license. The location of where the course may be taken depends on what state the dentist is licensed in. Infection control practices focus on preventing the spread of contagious germs from one patient to another. The infection control course will define terms that dentists may not be familiar with and train dentists on handling contagious diseases such as tuberculosis, AIDS and hepatitis B. Dentists also receive training on the proper methods to clean and sterilize equipment.

Academy of Clinical Sleep Disorders Disciplines

    • The Academy of Clinical Sleep Disorders Disciplines (ACSDD) offers dentists the ability to earn CE credits and training on how the structure of the mouth can affect the patient's ability to sleep. Dentists are instructed about different techniques that can be used to alter the structure of a patient's mouth to improve airflow and thereby improve patient's ability to sleep. The topics cover surgical, implant and retainer options.

    Orthodontic Courses

    • The ADA recognizes the field of orthodontics and the importance of dentists and orthodontic specialists to work together for the benefit of the patient. CE credits are available to dentists in the field of orthodontics. Courses provide dentists with the opportunity to participate in clinical diagnosis and treatment of patients. Orthodontic CE courses limit the number of participants in the program to ensure the patient still receives optimal care.

    Locating Additional Courses

    • Dentists who are looking for another type of CE credit course can find a list of certified providers at the ADA website. The ADA does state that not all courses offered by these training centers are certified for CE credits. Dentists need to verify that the course they are enrolling in will qualify for CE credits if that is the reason they are taking the course.
