Instructions

    • 1

Locate the place you want to fix the light pole in then dig a hole out using the post hole auger and fix the post in it firmly. It is possible to buy or rent out an auger of this type from home improvement shops and companies.

    • 2

Plow a trench from where you'll tap power from for the lamp to the pole. Dig the trench at least twelve inches deep to protect the cable that will run through it effectively. PVC sheathed cables are the best for the task since they are tough and resistant to mechanical damage and harsh conditions.

    • 3

Measure and cut a cable longer than the trench from the power source to the lamp post. Making the cable longer gives an allowance for future expansion and repair. Insert the cable into the trench and run it through it entire length leaving a reasonable length of the cable on both ends of the trench. Pass the cable on the lamp post end into the hole on your lamp post that runs through it along its length to where the lamp is fixed. If there is no hole through the pole, consider running the cable on the surface along its length. Fix the lamp holder onto the pole by screwing it in firmly. Locate the two terminals on the holder that are usually on the lower side of the holder and screw in the two wires from the cable to each terminal.

Isolate the two wires on the other end of the cable and identify the live and the earth. The live wire is usually insulated using a black, brown or red colored material while the neutral wire is normally insulated in white or gray. Screw these two wires to their respective terminals on the power source that is usually marked accordingly.

Insert the bulb or lamp into its holder then cover it with protective glass or a lamp shade to protect it from harsh conditions and to prevent anything from tampering with it. Use colorful and decorated glass or shades to cover the bulb to improve on its aesthetic value.
