Contact the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center. This organization offers a substantial number of low-cost or no-cost training programs. Some of their continuing education topics are domestic violence, intelligence awareness, and drug law enforcement.
Consider attending no-cost classes at the Counterdrug Training Center. If drug law enforcement is an area of interest, this could be a great aid to boosting your career. Although the facility is located in Florida's St. Petersburg, online training programs are available.
Study Spanish for free through the National Office of Justice program (see Resources). Visit their website for a comprehensive list of training courses. Similarly, the Police Officers Safety Association offers free training through their website.
Check the "Police Magazine" website for the latest up-to-the-minute coverage on topics including SWAT, weapons, women in law enforcement and gangs. TREXPO also does trade shows twice a year and offers classroom, hands-on training and extended continuing education programs.
Recruit potential continuing education trainers within the ranks. Rather than looking for external people, see who is qualified to teach what at the station. There may be, for instance, someone who has done a master's degree in abnormal psychology who would be willing to do a half-day workshop.
Investigate mentor programs. Some police departments already have them in place and pay senior officers to mentor a protegee.
