How to Not Get Distracted During Online School

Online courses provide a flexible, easy and affordable way for you to learn an additional skill or explore an area of knowledge. They can be taken in a number of subject areas and over various lengths of time. While some people are able to concentrate in the comfort of their own home, others are easily distracted.

Create an area of your home where you feel comfortable studying. Get a good desk and chair and find an area of your house that will become your new study area. This could be a home office room, or simply a work area in a kitchen or bedroom. Don't use this space for anything else, since you should only associate the space with your online course. Make sure you've had something to eat or drink beforehand, and are not tired when you start studying. Check to be sure that you have the required software and hardware for the course. Without them, you may not be able to turn in your work, view videos or take part in group sessions.

Be realistic. There is no point in setting unrealistic study goals. You usually can't spend eight hours on one piece of work, or write an essay in one sitting. Set challenging but achievable targets, such as reading a set number of pages or completing a certain number questions in each study session.

Be disciplined. Unlike traditional school or college students, you have little structure when studying online. Work when there are few distractions, and create a timetable for completing the work similar to what you would be given in an on-campus course. Put reminders in your wallet or purse, or post a note on the wall to remind yourself to study. Let other people know that you're unavailable during certain time slots.

Reward yourself. Studying should be enjoyable. Don't have negative thoughts about starting your work. Take a short break every two hours. Give yourself a piece of candy when you finish a chapter. Make sure you take breaks and time off to relax.

Keep in contact with other people who are taking the same course, as well as professors or instructors moderating it. Other students may be able to provide advice or guidance. Moderators know the subject content and typical questions students ask. Ask questions as soon they crop up.
