Youth Ministry Correspondence Courses

Becoming a youth pastor is one way you can both solidify your faith and help teach that faith to others. If you are interested in being a youth pastor, but cannot go to a school, you can take online correspondence courses to facilitate your learning. There are several important things to understand about these online courses before you begin.
  1. Schools

    • Several schools have youth pastor correspondence courses, so you can find one that is right for you. Check with your local diocese or church governing body to see if there is one that your particular church recommends. Or look at the programs of online schools like Finish the Race, Sozo Ministries, or Christian Leadership University (see resources) or others like them to find the school that is right for you.

    Enrollment and Fees

    • Some youth pastor correspondence courses cost money, and others are free or income based. Check the website of the program, or talk to your diocese about your personal payment abilities before you decide to enroll in one of the programs. For most programs that cost money, there are scholarships available.

    How They Work

    • Becoming a youth pastor is different than getting a specific degree through correspondence. Each youth pastor preparation program is different, so there will be a different list of courses that are necessary for you to take for each program. Some schools will consider you to be a youth ministry leader after you complete one specially designed course, and other schools have multiple correspondence courses you must take before you qualify, which is similar to getting an online degree. Either way, you will complete the course work outlined in your syllabus and send it back to the school to receive your youth pastor diploma.

    Job Opportunities

    • You can get a job once you've taken youth ministry correspondence courses. Many churches are on the lookout for someone who has been trained specially in youth ministry, and they will usually view correspondence training in the same way as on site training. However, be prepared to demonstrate what you know, and volunteer with youth for a while before being hired by a church.
