Practical nurses offer vital services to patients in hospitals, doctors' offices, clinics and long-term care facilities. Allied schools are available across the country offering training, certifications and preparation for a practical nursing licensing.

    • Brown Mackie College offers an associate degree in nursing and a diploma in practical nursing. Students take classes in general education, biological and behavioral sciences and the science of nursing. Nursing graduates are prepared to treat patients, take patient's medical histories, operate medical equipment, administer medications and help perform diagnostic tests. They work in hospitals and long-term care facilities, and as home health aides. Day and evening classes are available, as well as both full- and part-time schedules. Students take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX), and can seek entry-level nursing positions upon graduation.

    • Kaplan College offers certification training in practical nursing. The school's nurse training program offers hands-on clinical lab experience to prepare students for a career as acute care staff nurses, vocational nurses, long-term care or staff nurses, home health care nurses, and blood bank or public school health clerks. Graduates are taught to collect patient data, perform basic bedside nursing, perform tracheotomy care, educate patients and administer medication and documentation. Classes prepare students to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) required to become a practical nurse.

    • Porter and Chester Institute offers a nurse training certificate for practical nurses to work in hospitals, doctors' offices, clinics and long-term care facilities. Specialties include psychiatric nursing, adult and geriatric nursing and obstetrical and pediatric nursing. The school offers classes from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Clinical days begin at 8 a.m. Students are prepared to take the National Council Licensure Examination -- Practical Nurse (NCLEX-PN) to become licensed practical nurses (LPNs).
