Johns Hopkins University, one of the top health-science schools in the nation, offers forensic nursing as one of its clinical specializations within its Master of Science program. Within the forensic nursing program, further specialization is offered in areas such as death investigation, child abuse and neglect investigation, sexual assault, domestic abuse, abuse of the elderly and abuse of the developmentally disabled. Students complete 40 to 41 credit hours and take courses in intermediate biostatistics, clinical pharmacology, fundamentals of forensic nursing, advanced health assessment and measurement and the context of health care for advanced nursing practice.

The University of California at Riverside offers a certificate program in forensic nursing through its extension center, the distance education division of the university. This certificate program is designed to last nine to 18 months and requires the completion of 16 units of study. The program is for registered nurses who have already received their credentials in nursing but want to explore additional career paths within the nursing field. Areas of study covered by the program are taken online and include forensic science in the health care setting, sexual assault examination training, forensic approaches to blunt force and firearm injuries, death investigation and crime scene preservation, courtroom testimony and forensic approaches to domestic violence, mental health assessment and human abuse injuries.

Monmouth University in New Jersey also offers a graduate certificate in the area of forensic nursing. The program is divided up into two areas of core competency: forensics and forensic nursing. Students must complete a total of 21 credit hours overall. Of these, 12 hours are part of the forensics concentration. Courses taken include pathophysiology and histology, forensic pathology, advanced health assessment and diagnosis and treatment of psychopathology. The remaining nine credit hours in forensic nursing include courses in issues in forensic nursing, sexual assault examination, interpersonal violence and a forensic nursing research seminar and practicum.
