Techniques to Improve Communication Skills

Like all other skills, communication skills require targeted and consistent practice. With motivation and focus, you can become a better writer, a better speaker and a better listener. You can also become more aware of your body language and make sure that the nonverbal signals you send out don't work against you but reinforce the message you want to convey.
  1. Writing

    • To become a better writer, read a lot of good writing. This is the single most important way you can improve your vocabulary and learn to structure your sentences, paragraphs and articles. Always revise your writing, multiple times if necessary. Using a word processing tool will make this process relatively painless. Use tools such as dictionaries, thesauruses and style and grammar guides to make sure you are making the best word choices and applying them correctly. Enroll in a writing class. If you don't have the time or resources to attend an actual class, find a good online writing course. FInally, write, write and write more.

    Speaking

    • To be an effective verbal communicator in public speaking or in personal communications, know the person or group you are speaking to, and modify the tone and content of what you say accordingly. Join an organization such as Toastmasters to practice public speaking in a stress-free environment. Taking part in community dramatic performances can help you to learn voice control and modulation. Above all, take every opportunity you can to practice speaking and be willing to accept and learn from constructive criticism.

    Listening

    • All communication is a two-way street. You cannot be a good communicator without being a good listener. To test and improve your listening skills, do listening exercises with a partner in which each of you rephrases and repeats what the other has said. Watch a lecture or a TV show and take notes. Review the notes to see how well you have grasped the content. Take part in collaborative group projects where listening is an essential skill.

    Body Language

    • The key to improving nonverbal communication is awareness. Be aware of facial expressions, posture, gestures and tone of voice; your own as well as those of others. Maintaining eye contact is an important part of nonverbal communication. It shows that you are interested in the other person and also gives you the chance to observe him and respond to his body language. To improve your nonverbal skills, videotape yourself talking to someone and then watch the unspoken messages you are conveying. While watching TV or a movie, pay attention to the actor's tone of voice and body language. You will be surprised at how much you can learn.
