What Are Learning Centers & Why Are They Important?

Every parent wants to make sure that his child is receiving the education needed to understand subjects such as math and science and graduate to the next grade. Learning centers are one way to make sure that a child is not only learning, but developing emotionally, cognitively and socially. Learning centers can either be in a partitioned area of the classroom or in another area not inside the school.
  1. Classroom Learning Center

    • A classroom learning center allows a student to work alone on subjects that are not being taught by the teacher at that time. For instance, a teacher may instruct a student to go to the learning center to work on math problems while she reviews the math chapter with the rest of the class or teaches another subject, such as reading. Also, teachers can instruct a small group of students to work together in the classroom learning center. In the center, the students can use instructional materials and work on activities and special projects that aren't covered during the lesson. If there is a teacher assistant in the classroom, he may work in the classroom learning center to help students with their homework or conduct the projects.

Importance of the Classroom Learning Center

    • The importance of the classroom learning center is to provide a place where students can work on new activities, learn more about a subject matter such as English and reinforce what they have already been taught. Another important thing about the learning center is that students receive the education without the help or assistance of the classroom teacher. This provides a student-centered approach to learning.

    Community Learning Center

    • A community learning center is a program that provides academic enrichment opportunities during non-school hours, according to the U.S. Department of Education (DOE). Typically, students who are in low performing schools or high-poverty schools attend the community learning centers. Students are taught subjects such as reading that will re-enforce and complement what they've learned in school.

    Importance of Community Learning Center

    • According to the DOE, the importance of a community learning center is to ensure that students receive an education that meets local and state academic standards. This means that students don't fall behind in their education just because they are in schools that are low-performing. In addition, the community learning center is important because the program also provides educational services such as literacy programs to the families of participating students.
