Working with blocks introduces children to the basics of geometry by encouraging them to build symmetrical shapes. The children learn that in order to create a standing structure that will not fall, they must create a structure that is proportionate in shape and weight. Children also begin to understand the basic shapes that make up all parts of life. For example, they acquaint themselves with squares, circles and triangles. They use these basic shapes to create larger structures, giving them an understanding of how these shapes work together to build a new shape.
Building with blocks helps develop the creative side of a child's mind. The children can create a mosaic by laying the blocks out in specific patterns or building something three-dimensional with the shapes. Allow the children to run wild with their creations to support their individuality and personal vision. If your students have trouble forming their own ideas on what to create, prompt them to create something in their own style. For example, ask them to build a model of their house and observe the interesting additions they make to the actual design.
Children, when working in the block center, may work together to build a mutual idea. While this seems like the natural thing to do, it's actually a very important part of a child's development. They learn to share and give directions on how to construct shapes, which also builds leadership skills. Even if the children don't work together to build the same object, they learn to share the limited resources with each other, which is another important skill.
After block play, children must learn to clean up their mess. Playing with the blocks is one thing, but cleaning up afterwards shows respect for mutual property. Be firm with the kids and insist that the blocks all return to their proper places. Remind the children often about where each block goes and don't let the children wander off until the block center returns to its proper state. Have the children inspect the block area with you and point out mistakes so they can learn.
