Schools Offering Marine Biology Degrees

Marine biology involves the study of organisms and animals in the ocean and other bodies of water. Marine biology will focus both on microscopic organisms such as zooplankton and large animals such as sharks and whales.
  1. Marine Biology Degree Programs

    • A lot of schools and colleges all over the United States offer marine biology degree programs. Students are usually required to finish a bachelor's degree in biology, zoology or any other life science before enrolling in a master's degree program in marine biology.

    Florida International University

    • The Florida International University Marine Sciences Department is situated on the newly constructed campus in Biscayne Bay. FIU has access to diverse ecosystems and marine habitat on the South Florida and Caribbean coast. FIU also offers other biological science majors including chemistry and biochemistry.

    University of California Los Angeles

    • The UCLA Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology requires students in marine biology to participate in the marine biology quarter (MBQ) program. The MBQ program allows undergraduates to experience the life of a real marine biologist. Under the supervision of department faculty and assistants, students must design and research their own projects, collect data and specimens, conduct an experiment and formulate a hypothesis that will they will present at the end of the quarter.

    University of Georgia

    • The Department of Marine Sciences at the University of Georgia does not offer a marine science major but participates in the interdisciplinary studies program of the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences. Students can then focus on studies in marine biology, marine chemistry and other marine sciences while being housed at the Athens, Savannah campus.

    Boston University

    • Residents of Massachusetts can look to the Boston University Marine Program (BUMP) for interdisciplinary and hands-on studies on marine biology and other Earth sciences such as geography. Boston University also offers field experience and coursework in Central America and the Caribbean to provide students with physical interactions with different marine organisms and species.
