There are a multitude of online websites that offer free games that help fledgling drivers hone their driving skills. Such games ask players to park a car in a small open spot between two other cars, stop a virtual vehicle precisely on a painted line or navigate through a busy intersection without hitting pedestrians or other cars. These games help players get familiar with the basic maneuvers of successful driving before actually climbing into a car.
Road sign recognition games are available as flash cards, as online games, or as quizzes. A sample memory challenge might include a multiple choice response to a question such as: "A brown sign indicates....?" or "This symbol means...?"
There are no shortage of online sites that offer quizzes tailored to driver's test requirements. Some offer quizzes specific to certain states. These quizzes help hopeful drivers cram for questions such as: "What should you do before passing another vehicle?" or 'What do flashing red lights on a school bus mean?" Many DMV websites also offer their driver's manuals online, complete with study questions that test knowledge of covered material.
Some online driver's ed games are about safety. Players can take on the challenge of driving drunk --- virtually speaking --- to get a feel for just how hard it is to keep a car on the road while intoxicated. (See Resources.) Other games have driver's ed "teacher" characters who react with horror when the student does something unsafe with the car --- all to underscore the message that safety must always come first when driving.
