Driving Instructor Colleges

To be a driving instructor, you need to have a high school diploma or GED, driver's license and, depending on the state, be older than 18 or 21 years of age. You must attend an accredited and state-recognized instructor program. After you receive your certification, take a written test and pass a background check, you will be licensed by the state and can begin to teach.
  1. Anne Arundel Community College

    • Anne Arundel Community College in Maryland offers two courses for driving instructors. The Driver Education Instructor Certification teaches the standardized curriculum, presentation skills and classroom techniques for prospective driver's ed instructors. As of February 2011, the fee for the course was $450. The college also offers a practical Driver Education Instructor Certification. Both courses are required by the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration to obtain a driving instructor license.

    Olivet Nazarene University

    • Olivet Nazarene University in Illinois offers a certification program for high school teachers who want to add driver education to their resume. The three courses cover general, personal safety and safety education, as well as teach the skills to organize classroom instruction. Program applicants must complete a Driver's Approval Questionnaire, hold a valid Illinois driver's license and be a Motor Vehicle Record-approved driver. The program is 16 credits, and there is a $50 application fee.

    Colony Driving School

    • In Texas, the Colony Driving School offers training through its certification program. The course is divided into three phases, and students must pass each phase to move on to the next. Applicants must be able to speak English, at least 21 years of age and have five years of driving experience. The course takes three weekends to complete. Other programs offered by Colony Driving School include Driver Education Teacher, Supervising Teacher, Teacher Assistant and F/T Teacher Assistant.

    Further Education

    • To teach driver's education in high school, you will need a teaching degree. Schools like St. Cloud University offer programs that prepare current teachers to teach driver's ed. This option is good for teachers, driving instructors and education majors that want to further their education. Look for continuing education courses at colleges and universities in your area that offer driving instructor classes in your area.
