How to Get New CCNA Certification

The Cisco Certified Network Associate, CCNA for short, is an information technology certification that shows validation of knowledge in networks and related areas. Topics include basic and wireless networking, connecting to remote sites via a wide area network (WAN) and dealing with security threats. When hiring for positions such as network engineers and systems administrators, many employers look for candidates with this designation. There are several steps involved in obtaining a new CCNA certification.

The CCNA certification requires you to take and pass Cisco exam 640-802 or exams 640-822 and 640-816. To prepare for the exam, many companies offer online or classroom preparation and training. In-person classes are usually more expensive and are often "boot camp" type classes that present a lot of material in a short period of time. Decide if you want to take a class to prepare for the exam. If you choose to self-study, obtain a study guide that outlines the concepts and offers several practice questions. Networking is more complex than simply setting up a home wireless network, so if you are new to the concepts, consider investing the time and money in a class.

Get hands-on experience in the networking concepts you are learning, if possible. Supplement your training by visiting Cisco's Learning Network to review tested subjects. You will need to register for the site but there are many good resources to help you master each task. Review the e-Lab simulations for visual demonstrations of certain topics.

Register to take the exam or exams. Don't forget that if you choose to take 640-822, you will also need to take 640-816. Pearson Vue administers the exams and you can make a testing appointment online. Research prices, as some companies offer discount vouchers for the exams.

Take the exam and try to pass it on the first attempt. After you succeed, consider adding one of the CCNA concentrations that are available. Concentrations are available in Security, SP Operations, Voice and Wireless. These will require additional exams but will help you further your knowledge in a specific area. In addition, research the additional levels of certification available. CCNA is considered an associate level and can serve as a basis for attaining more knowledge and higher-level certifications such as the Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP).
