Determine the project management certification that suits your present experience and career goals. The most important certification the PMI offers is the Project Management Professional (PMP), for those with demonstrated competence in managing projects. Entry-level project managers can opt for the Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM). Browse the PMI website to get details of these and other specialized credentials.
Enroll for a course to acquire the minimum 35 contact hours of training in project management. Select a course that is based on the Project Management Body Of Knowledge (PMBOK) to familiarize yourself with PMI jargon that will figure in the PMP exam. Take practice and mock tests during the course to prepare for the exam.
Become a member of the PMI to obtain a discount on the PMP examination fee. Besides, you will also receive a copy of the PMBOK free. You can also gain access to others in the PMI community, from whom you can get useful tips on taking the PMP exam.
Apply online on the PMI website with your personal information and educational qualifications, including details of the 35 contact hours of training you have taken. Complete the application form, attach your resume and use a credit card to pay the PMP exam fee. Wait for approval of your application and schedule a date for your exam. After approval, you have an eligibility period of one year to pass the PMP exam; if you do not pass, you may retake the exam three times by paying a reexamination fee.
Prepare for the exam by revising your project management concepts from the study course and studying from the PMBOK. Remember that the number of questions on inputs and outputs for PMBOK processes is not very large. Focus your preparation on recognizing the formula for a given situation, rather than on memorizing the formula itself. Find out if other PMI members are also taking the exam and form a study group. Speak to PMI members who have successfully cleared the PMP exam and get tips on how you should prepare.
Take the four-hour PMP exam and answer to the best of your ability. Wait for the results as to whether you passed the exam and acquired your PMI certification. To maintain your credentials, complete 60 hours of continuing education credits within the next three years.
