How to Add a List to an APA-Style Paper

There are two kinds of lists you can add to an APA-style paper: a numbered list and a list using bullets. Each method has similar rules regarding the use of upper-case letters, spacing and punctuation. These lists are allowed to be inserted directly within the text and are not required to be put in an appendix. They are commonly used to bring the reader's attention to specific points.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine if your list needs to convey a chronological order or an order of importance for your items. If so, follow proper formatting for a numbered list. All other lists should use the bullet formatting.

    • 2

Start your first item on the list by moving to a new line in the text. Add a bullet or the number one, left-justified and without a indentation. Follow the number with a period and a space. Follow the bullet with a space.

    • 3

Write the first item by capitalizing the first letter of the first word. Continue by adding a word, sentence or paragraph as the first item, using proper punctuation and spelling.

    • 4

Write out the first item completely. Skip to next line and add a bullet or the number two and repeat the format for the first item. Repeat for all items on the list, adding one to the number for each item on a numbered list.
