Psychological Motivational Techniques

Maslow's psychological theory of the hierarchy of needs or motives states that human beings have basic and growth needs. Basic needs such as physiological and safety needs should be fulfilled before the needs to belong and have self-esteem can be addressed. Maslow places growth needs such as the need to learn, aesthetic needs and self-actualization at the top of his hierarchy. He suggests that growth needs or motives surface once all the base level needs have been met.
  1. Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs

    • You should consider which of your needs have been met on Maslow's hierarchy. Identification of un-met needs provides you with insight on which need motivates you the most so you can understand your basic source of motivation. These needs should be taken into consideration when setting and prioritizing goals.

    Creating a Motivational Environment

    • Your environment can inspire you to achieve your goals. People should surround themselves with people who are positive and motivate them. A goal of weight loss can be supported by creating a healthy home environment with a kitchen stocked with nutritious foods and a home gym stocked with exercise equipment.

    Goal-Setting

    • Goal-setting can provide you with a strong sense of motivation. It is important to set up clear short- and long-term goals that are achievable. These goals should be aligned with your values and vision for the kind of future you want to create.

    Providing Incentives

    • Corporations often motivate employees by providing incentives such as extra days off when a milestone is reached. You can use the same technique to achieve self-motivation. You can reward yourself with objects or activities that provide you with an incentive to complete your goals on schedule.

    Developing Self-efficacy

    • Albert Bandura's principle states that people will engage in activities based on their perceived level of self-competence. You can create an innate feeling of self-confidence by dividing goals into a series of tasks you know you can accomplish. Effective task-completion strategies enable you to approach tasks with self-confidence.
