Begin the program either by logging into the online lessons or by inserting the disc into your computer's CD-ROM drive. Rosetta Stone languages are divided into multiple levels, with each available separately or in packages.
Choose the lesson you wish to study. First-time users should choose the first lesson available in the program. Some languages, such as Japanese, also require a choice of alphabets to appear (or not appear) on the screen during the lesson.
Complete each lesson in order as instructed. Each lesson has ten questions focusing on picking the right image from a set of four. The program does not use any language during the lesson other than the one being taught, so do not spend time looking up the words or fussing over things you don't know. Wrong answers are part of the learning process and lessons can be repeated any time.
Select the next lesson or repeat the previous one until comfortable moving on. Since Rosetta Stone is made to be used without instruction, you may complete as many lessons at once as you choose.
Utilize the software regularly. This is the most important part of studying with Rosetta Stone. Doing one or two lessons a week will not lead to fluency. Try to complete a couple of lessons every day, focusing on mastering the previous lesson before moving on to the next.
