How to Find Your Way If You Need Help

Getting lost is frustrating, but with advancing technology, you can find your way from any location. Navigation systems are now available in mobile phones, on your dash, or built right into your car. However, you may have to find your way without the help of a global positioning system (GPS) device, and you may have to use a compass and a map in such instances.

Instructions

    • 1

Look around and try to find a landmark, such as a tall building, a monument, a major street or a river. Locate this landmark on your map. Enter the name of the nearby street into your GPS device (if you have this device) and it will give you your location.

    • 2

Find a road or a river and follow it, to avoid walking in circles.

    • 3

Take note of natural direction givers, such as the sunset or sunrise; the sun rises in the east and sets in the west. Alternatively, locate the direction by using a compass.

    • 4

Make yourself visible for possible rescue teams or Good Samaritans --- wear bright clothing, use fire signals or walk on high ground. Blow the whistle three times, which is a recognized distress call if you are lost in the woods.

    • 5

Approach a friendly person, if lost in the city, and ask what location you are in and how to get to your destination.

    • 6

Dial the number of a friend, if you can access a phone, and explain to him where you are. Describe landmarks, such as buildings or streets, that you can see. This will help your friend find you.
