Look around and try to find a landmark, such as a tall building, a monument, a major street or a river. Locate this landmark on your map. Enter the name of the nearby street into your GPS device (if you have this device) and it will give you your location.
Find a road or a river and follow it, to avoid walking in circles.
Take note of natural direction givers, such as the sunset or sunrise; the sun rises in the east and sets in the west. Alternatively, locate the direction by using a compass.
Make yourself visible for possible rescue teams or Good Samaritans --- wear bright clothing, use fire signals or walk on high ground. Blow the whistle three times, which is a recognized distress call if you are lost in the woods.
Approach a friendly person, if lost in the city, and ask what location you are in and how to get to your destination.
Dial the number of a friend, if you can access a phone, and explain to him where you are. Describe landmarks, such as buildings or streets, that you can see. This will help your friend find you.
