How to Carry Out a Court of Honor

A Court of Honor is a meeting of a Boy Scout troop that is held at least once every quarter for the purpose of recognizing scouts who have earned merit badges and advancements. The scoutmaster generally conducts the Court of Honor. While there is no set script for these meetings, they should contain several elements.

    • 1

      Assign members of one patrol in your troop to present the colors. Invite members of the audience to stand and say the Pledge of Allegiance.

      Have the scoutmaster welcome the scouts and their guests to the Court of Honor. A scout or invited guest can give the opening prayer.

      Introduce any dignitaries who may be present. Introductions are typically handled by the scout master.

      Present merit badges and advancements to the recipients. The awarding of merit badges usually takes place first. When rank advancements are made, scouts are called to the front of the room, along with their parents, to receive their awards.

      Have the scoutmaster make announcements and closing comments. Following this, another scout or invited guest gives the closing prayer. Retire the colors.
