How to Carry Out the Lexical Notebook

When learning to properly speak the English language, you must learn its vocabulary. Whether you are in a regular English class in elementary, middle or high school, or whether you are enrolled in an English as a Second Language ("ESL") course at any age, lexical notebooks can help you learn new words or phrases. These notebooks help you improve your vocabulary, as you will keep track unfamiliar words and phrases. Basic school supplies are needed to create a lexical notebook.

Write each of the following section names on its own notebook tab: "Collocations," "Idioms," "Prefixes, Roots, Suffixes," "Word Form Charts" and "Miscellaneous." The sections may differ, depending on the instructions given to you by your instructor. If the sections differ from this list, follow those instructions, instead.

    • 2

Divide up your notebook into different sections, based on the tabs you created. Place one tab on the first page of each divided section. The tabs are used so that you can easily reach a particular section in your notebook.

    • 3

Write down examples in appropriate sections of your notebook. For example, during your English lesson, your teacher explains the meaning of "Collocations." A collocation is an arrangement or juxtaposition of words. "Bosom buddy" is an example of a collocation that you should know. It means "close, intimate friends." Write this unfamiliar phrase, along with its meaning, in the "Collocations" section in the notebook.

    • 4

Review the newly written words or phrases periodically to make sure you understand their meanings. Do not just review them for homework assignments. Practicing the words and phrases helps you learn to pronounce them and understand how they are used in the English language.
