How to Punctuate a Non-Profit Name in Essays

When writing an essay, there's a lot to think about: the material, sentence structure, paragraph order, spelling and a number of other elements that are important to the success of the piece. Getting the punctuation right is also essential, since a poorly-punctuated piece is both hard to read and looks unprofessional. When punctuating the name of a non-profit in an essay, the standard rules of English apply and the name of the non-profit organization is capitalized the same way as the name of any other organization.

Instructions

    • 1

Write the name of the non-profit organization in sentence case, without quotations, around the name of the organization. That means the first letter of the organization's name should be capitalized, and each subsequent letter should be in lower case. If the organization has two words or more in its name, capitalize each word.

If the name of the organization is an acronym, write the entire name in capital letters, provided you have already written out the full version of the acronym. Do not place periods between letters in an acronym unless the task or assignment specifically calls for this.

For example: I have to travel to the United Nations (UN) today. The meeting is taking place at the UN building downtown.

Follow the name with a part of speech or punctuation. After writing the name in sentence case, follow up the word with another word, a period, a semi-colon, a colon or a period. If the organization uses an abbreviated word in its name, follow the full name of the organization with a period.

If, for instance, the organization uses the word "incorporated," and you are abbreviating this word, add a period, then continue the sentence. For example: "I work for Save the Dolphins Inc., which helps endangered dolphins."

In some cases, words such as "Inc." or "Corp." may be omitted. Check with your instructor or supervisor, or check past communications that contain the organization's name, to confirm whether the full name must be used.

    • 3

Repeat each time you use the name of the non-profit. Maintain consistent usage throughout the essay -- if you use the full name of the organization, then use the acronym subsequently, continue to use the acronym throughout the rest of the essay. If use the non-profit's full name only, do so each time.
