How to Make Changes to the FASFA

When submitting the Federal Application for Free Student Aid, you're required to enter a wealth of information. It's easy to make a mistake and include the wrong information when filling out the application. Fortunately, you can make changes to your FAFSA and correct any and all information. You can make corrections online or by mailing in your corrected Student Aid Report. If your FAFSA has been submitted to the federal processor, you must wait until it has been processed before making corrections.

Instructions

    • 1

Sign into your FAFSA profile via the Department of Education FAFSA website. You will need a PIN to sign in. If you do not have a PIN, apply for one by clicking "PIN Site" once the FAFSA website loads.

    • 2

Click "Start Here" on the FAFSA website and enter the requested personal information and security information. Your FAFSA will appear. Select which section of the FAFSA you would like to correct and make changes by entering the new information.

    • 3

Submit the corrected FAFSA application. If you are a dependent and updated your parent's information, your parent must sign the application with a PIN prior to submitting it. If your parent does not have a PIN, they can apply for one by clicking "PIN Site" on the FAFSA homepage.

    Mail

    • 4

Locate your paper Student Aid Report. You should have received a Student Aid Report in the mail seven to 10 days after your FAFSA was processed. The report contains your FAFSA information.

    • 5

Write the correct information next to the incorrect information with a pen. If you wish, you may cross out the incorrect information, but doing so is not necessary.

    • 6

Write down the federal processor address that appears on the Student Aid Report. Place the corrected report in an envelope and mail it to the federal processor. A corrected Student Aid Report will be mailed to you.
