Grasshopper Craft Ideas

Young children enjoy learning about animals and the environment that surrounds them. Crafting about grasshoppers is a way of developing their creativity and observation skills, and also learning about the body parts of these insects. You can use a wide range of materials when crafting grasshoppers, from recyclable materials, such as cardboard toilet rolls, to clothespins.
  1. Toilet Roll Grasshoper

    • Trim the ends of the toilet roll by cutting diagonally to create the grasshopper's body. Paint the toilet roll in green and leave it to dry. Use green pipe cleaner for the legs. As a grasshopper’s hind legs are longer, you will need two 4-inch-long pieces of pipe cleaner to make them. For the front legs, cut two 3-inch-long pieces and for the middle legs cut two 2-inch-long pieces. Glue the legs on the trimmed side of the toilet roll. Draw the head and antennae on green construction paper, cut it out and glue it to the body.

    Clothespin Grasshopper

    • Paint a wooden clothespin green and allow it to dry. Cut two 3-inch-long pieces of wire and bend them forming 45-degree angles, to make the grasshopper's legs. Glue them to the sides of the clothespin. Finally, use a black marker to draw the eyes on the top. Alternatively, glue wiggle eyes. Attach two pins or pieces of wire for the antennae.

    Egg Carton Grasshopper

    • Cut a set of three cups out of an egg carton and paint it. Buy a rubber ball about the size of the egg cup. Fit it in the middle cup, securing with a pin at each side. Cut six pieces of pipe cleaner to make the legs. Attach them to the sides of the middle cup. Draw the wings on cardboard, paint them and cut them out. Glue the wings to the top. Use pieces of pipe cleaner or wire to make the antennae. Glue on wiggle eyes or small buttons. Drop the grasshopper onto a hard surface to see it hop.

    Clay Grasshopper

    • Buy some colorful clay or play-dough to craft a grasshopper with your children. First, explore the garden to find grasshoppers and observe their body parts. Alternatively, show the children some illustrations. Shape the head, body and wings separately. Use toothpicks to attach the body to the head, but to attach the wings, only apply pressure. Use pieces of wire to make the grasshopper's legs and antennae.
