Tractor Craft Ideas

Children have a natural fascination with machinery, and fall is the perfect time to introduce your preschooler or kindergartener to farming and the harvest. Simple and fun tractor crafts can get them thinking about the fall harvest and provide wonderful teaching opportunities for parents and teachers alike. Many tractor crafts require very few supplies and can likely be made with things you will find in your classroom or around the house.
  1. "T" is for Tractor

    • Creating pictures from a letter gives a child hands-on experience with the letter while reinforcing the connection between the letter, the sound and the word. Begin by cutting a capital "T" from a sheet of construction paper of any color. Cut two different sized circles from a sheet of black construction paper. Lay the "T" on its side and glue the smaller wheel on the "T"’s arm. Glue the larger wheel to the base of the "T" so that the bases of both wheels are even. If you wish for the wheels to spin, attach the wheels to the tractor with fasteners. Use crayons or markers to complete the "T" tractors.

    Footprint Tractor

    • Hand and footprint crafts are popular and cherished keepsakes for parents. They also provide unique sensory opportunities for the child. The Handprint and Footprint Art website recommends starting by painting the bottom of the child's foot with red or green paint. Carefully place the foot on the paper so that the inside arch of the foot is facing down to become the underside of the tractor. Allow the print to dry before gluing construction paper wheels on or drawing them on using markers. You can also use metal brads to make the wheels spin. Use markers or pipe cleaners and glue to create a seat, gear shift and steering wheel. Have the child decorate the rest of the paper with a farm scene.

    Stamp Tractor

    • For this tractor, you need two rectangular kitchen sponges, one large and one small. Cut two different sized circles from the larger sponge. Press the smaller sponge into the paint color of your choice and use it to create the body of the tractor. Press the circular sponges into black paint and use them to create the wheels. Once the tractor has dried, let the child add his own decorations to the piece.

    Tube Tractor

    • Empty paper towel or toilet paper rolls make excellent tractor bodies for a tube tractor craft. Paint the tube and add wheels with fasteners. Use pipe cleaners to fashion a seat and steering wheel and use craft glue to attach them to the roll. Take a nature walk and allow the child to decorate her tractor with things she finds.
