Sea Animal Craft Ideas for Preschoolers

The ocean and sea creatures are great themes for a preschool classroom. Young children can be fascinated to learn how fish move, how big a shark's teeth are and how starfish stick to rocks. Try to include visuals whenever possible, particularly if you are not in a coastal area and many of your students have never seen the ocean. Each of these projects can be preceded by looking at photos of the animal and discussing its special qualities.
  1. Paper Plate Jellyfish

    • For this art project, you will need paper plates, glue, food coloring, glitter and crepe paper of different colors. To prepare, cut the paper plates in half so you have a half for each student. Mix glue, glitter and food coloring together to make a sparkly and colorful paste. You can make several batches of different colors. Finally, cut the crepe paper into several lengths, making sure you have enough for at least six per child. Allow children to paint the colorful glue onto the paper plate, and then attach the crepe paper along the bottom. Once dried, these jellyfish can be hung from the ceiling as decorations.

    Handprint Octopus

    • This is a simple and fun art project, though it may become messy. To prepare, pour several different colors of paint onto paper plates, and lay out a piece of white construction paper for each child. Have your students come forward one at a time and choose a color. Paint the palm and four fingers on each hand, skipping the thumbs. Help your student to press one hand and then the other onto the paper, overlapping the palms to make the octopus body and fanning the fingers to make the tentacles.

    Make a Beach

    • This project requires some preparation and you may prefer to save it for the end of the week. You will need to cut out the shapes of sea animals that are seen on the beach, such as crabs, starfish and turtles. You can also include small craft shells. You will also need several cups of craft sand, glue, paint brushes and sturdy construction paper. Ask your students to liberally apply glue to their paper and then cover the glue with sand, sea animals and shells to create their own beach.

    Contact Paper Fish

    • To prepare this project, cut a fish shape out of contact paper for each student. Also, cut several different colors of tissue paper into small squares. Lay the fish shapes sticky side up on a table, and show your class how to add scales to the fish by pushing the tissue paper onto the contact paper. To make the scales shiny you can add a thin layer of glue on top of them. Once complete, these fish can be displayed on a window, creating a stained glass effect on sunny days.
