Instructions

    • 1

Design a sofa according to your taste, including the pattern and colors. Draw a sketch of a three-piece sofa: one piece to seat three people, and the other two to seat one person each. Include measurements and a parts list. Choose suitable leather from an upholstery store.

    • 2

Read and use the measurement from your sketch to cut western red cedar. Use a saw to cut six pieces to measure 5 feet each, and 12 pieces to measure 2 ½ feet each. These form the length of all the seats. Next,

    • 3

Cut 18 wood pieces that measure 2 ½ feet each. These form the sides of all three seats. Cut six pieces measuring 3 feet high each for the back rest, height and legs. Cut another six pieces for the front legs and height.

    • 4

Take five pieces of the 5-foot long wood, four of 2 ½ feet pieces, two of the back rest pieces and two of the front leg pieces. Use the mortising machine to make tenon joints on the end of each piece that forms the length and sides. Next, make mortise joints on all the pieces that form the back rest as well as on the front legs. Ensure the mortise joints are positioned 1 inch from the top on the back rest and 1 ½ feet from the bottom. Add other mortise joints 3 inches from the bottom on both the back rest and front leg pieces.

    • 5

Arrange and attach the wood pieces in their correct order. All of the length-wise pieces should attach to the back rest, with the front leg pieces attaching to the corresponding section. The side pieces also attach to the backrest and front leg pieces. Fit tje corresponding joints together and secure each with a nail gun to form the main frame structure of the three-seat sofa.

    • 6

Make tenon joints on nine pieces of wood pieces, measuring 2 ½ feet for two of the back rest pieces and two of the front legs. Make mortise joints 1 inch from the top of the back rests, 1 ½ feet from the bottom of the back rests and front legs, and 3 inches from the bottom of all the back rests and front legs. Attach all the pieces together following the method in Step 4 to complete a one-seat sofa frame. Repeat the same procedure to form the second one-seat sofa frame.

    • 7

Measure and cut plywood to fit into the seating spaces and the back rests of each sofa. Secure the plywood using a nail gun. Place 5-inch, high-density furniture grade foam on the plywood. Trim any extra materials away using a pair of scissors. Spray adhesive under the foam pieces and bind them to the plywood. Place blankets on the rest of the wooden surfaces without foam, leaving out the 3-inch spaces for the legs.

    • 8

Place leather on the foam. Tuck away the extra material under the foam, wood and blanket. Stretch it tight and secure to the wooden frames using a staple gun. Trim away any extra material. Secure the leather to the frames using the nail gun, ensuring the spacing is 1 inch apart for each nail. Decorate the legs to your taste by curving out patterns with a chisel.

    • 9

Drill small holes on the outside back the of plywood. Insert a turfing twine following the plan you drew up. Sew in eight sofa buttons on the three-seat coach using a German needle and a turfing twine on the back rest, according to your design. Fix eight more buttons on the seat. Do the same with the one-seat sofa, using only two buttons each for the back rest and seat cushion. Repeat the procedure for the other one-seat sofa.
