How to Learn Hebrew at Home

Hebrew is sometimes viewed as a lost or dead language because it's used so sparingly today. It's even rare in smaller communities and rural areas to find someone who speaks or reads the language. When you first start researching the language, you'll find that it's primarily used in the Jewish faith. As the letters and sounds are different than you're accustomed to, it's best to work on learning the reading, writing and speaking parts at the same time, which makes things easier.

Use the Ancient Hebrew Research Center to start learning Hebrew at home. The website has clearly outlined lessons that cover the letters in the Hebrew alphabet, along with information on how to write each letter. Other lessons cover verbs and more complicated concepts in the language.

Listen to how the Hebrew language sounds when spoken by a native speaker. Hebrew for Christians offers audio files that let you hear the language spoken. This teaches you how the words should sound and lets your ears adjust to the new sounds.

    • 3

Practice writing the Hebrew words in your own hand. Copy the words exactly as they appear on your computer screen and repeat the words as you write. Make sure that you know what you're writing and continue practicing. Before long, you'll associate the words with their meaning in your head.

    • 4

Repeat the words as you hear them spoken. You want to draw connections in your mind between the words and their sounds. When you listen to the audio files, carefully repeat each phrase and then repeat the meaning. When you hear Hebrew spoken, you'll start to hear things you know.
