Accuracy and speed when typing is very important in the world of work. According to customtyping.com, the minimum speed for most typing jobs is 40 words per minute (wpm). Experienced typists can average 80 to 100 words or more. You can learn basic typing skills on various websites, which will also impart other tips about being a proficient typist.

    • Visit typeonline.co.uk and select Exercise 1 from the drop-down menu. Read the instructions below the brown box about how to use the home keys (a,s,d,f,;,l,k,j) and the tips on how to stay on the home row only. Click "Start" when you are ready, and the first exercise will begin. Type the letters as seen on the screen, using the instructions underneath the white box where you are typing. After you are done with each exercise, the program will show you your typing speed (words per minute), your accuracy percentage, how many mistakes you made, and what mistakes you made. Do each exercise in its entirety and note what mistakes you make. Study each mistake, learning why you made it. Retake the exercise until you are proficient. Use the white toolbar on the left-hand side of the screen to learn the safety precautions when typing for extended periods of time, how to be proficient with the number pad, to practice typing full sentences, and to take a speed test.

    • Visit sense-lang.org/typing an click on "Tutorials" at the top, and then "Instruction." Read the six-step introduction. Click on "Typing Tutorials" at the top, next to "Instruction," and then click on Lesson 1 to begin. Follow the instructions on the screen to begin a simple home-keys practice test. At the top you will be able to see your words per minute, and at the right-hand side you will be able to see the total time you have been working on the exercise, how many letters you've typed correctly, and how many letters you've typed incorrectly. You can change the page background with the tiles in the bottom right corner. After you're done with the lesson, click "Exit" near the top right-hand side of the page, and select the second lesson. Practice with many exercises before moving onto different areas of the website to ensure that you are comfortable with the home keys, and with using them to type full words and sentences. Each lesson gets harder, so it is a good idea to at least try each one. You also have the option of clicking on "Practice your own text" on this same page and copying and pasting your own text into the box. After you done with the home-key exercises, you may practice the key pad by clicking on "Key Pad Tutorials" at the top of the homepage, play typing games, or take a typing test (you must click the graphic to start it).

    • Visit http://www.goodtyping.com/introduccion.htm and read the introduction on the homepage. Then scroll down to the button that says "Start Lesson 1," and click on it. Read the introduction to Lesson 1, and then click in the white box to begin typing the grayed-out letters. That letter that you are on will be underlined in red. When you're done with one row of text, press the enter key to move down and begin typing the next set of text. Each line of text is harder than the preceding line. When you are done with the lesson, it will automatically take you to your results page, showing your errors, period of time it took, keystrokes per minute, and words per minute. You may retake Lesson 1 or move onto the next one by clicking each respective button. If you click on Lesson 2, read the instructions and then do the exercise. There are 48 lessons in total, each one harder than the last.
