Paint the coffee can with a heat-resistant, metallic black paint. Remove any paper labeling first, and then coat the inside and outside of the can thoroughly.
Drill a hole in the center of the can's base, big enough for the light fitting. The light will then shine out of the coffee can and effectively be funneled through it.
Use the electrical tape to edge the hole to prevent cutting yourself on the sharp, exposed edge.
Secure the light fitting in the hole using more electrical tape. If the hole is the correct size, it will be fit securely in the gap. The bulb sits inside the can, while the cables run out of the base and then connected to the power supply.
Screw the bulb into the light fitting. Make sure that it is fastened securely so that you avoid electrocuting yourself.
Run the cables out of the base of the can and plug it into a power supply. Test the light by switching the electricity on. Once you have made sure the light is working, turn it off again.
Tape the clear spotlight filter over the open end of the can. Use black tape so that it is camouflaged against the black paint, and give your DIY spotlight a more professional look.
Drill a hole on the side of the can, and screw the clamp into place. Clamp the light to the top of a door or high above the area that needs to be lit up. Alternatively, tie a loop of thin wiring around the middle of the can, and then suspend it from the ceiling. For a short shoot, simply ask a friend to stand on a chair or ladder and hold the light in place while the subject is filmed.
