How to Construct a Car Game

If you want to construct an online car game, a good approach is to construct the game prototype first. You can then use the prototype as a car game for yourself and as a guide to design your online car game. One of the best ways to construct car game prototype is with blocks, toy cars and checkered tablecloths. In this game, maze blocks are used to construct a maze. Each player rolls a die to determine how many tablecloth squares he can move his toy car. Obstacles are placed for specific roll combinations.

Things You'll Need

  • Blocks of varying size and color
  • Checkered tablecloth
  • Toy automobile and roadway props
  • Shoe box

Instructions

    • 1

Look for maze diagrams online (see Resources) and in book stores or sketch one of your own. Place blocks on the tablecloth (on the edges of the the tablecloth squares) using the diagram as a guide. Make sure there is adequate clearance for the toy cars and obstacles between the blocks.

    • 2

Place toy stop lights, pedestrians, police cars, wrecked cars, flat tires, animals, wrenches, trash cans and other props in a shoe box.

    • 3

Label each square on the tablecloth with a unique number using a marker. Start from the left-hand upper corner with the number 1 and sequentially raise that number for each square to the right until you reach the end of the row. Continue labeling squares with the first column on the second row. Continue in this fashion until all the tablecloth squares have been uniquely labeled.

    • 4

Count the total number of squares the maze covers. Use two dice if the number of squares is less than 36, use three dice if the number of squares is less than or equal to 216 but greater than 36, use four dice if the number of squares is less than or equal to 1,296 but greater than 216. Call these dice the "obstacle dice."

    • 5

Explain the rules to the players. A player's turn will consist of one roll of one die, called the "move die," and the player moves the piece the same number of tablecloth squares that appear on the move die. Inform the players that if an obstacle is present in the path, the player will be entitled to one more roll, call the "remove obstacle" roll.

    • 6

Require that every time a player rolls a six, the player will be required to roll the obstacle dice. An obstacle from the shoebox will be placed on the tablecloth square that has the same number that is rolled with the obstacle dice. If the obstacle dice number is not on the tablecloth, an obstacle will not be placed.

    • 7

Explain the obstacles. If an obstacle is in the path of a player, the player cannot move her playing piece past the obstacle. Require that the player roll the move die and roll a 3 to remove the obstacle if it is the path in which the player wants to move. Allow only one roll per player turn to remove the obstacle.

    • 8

Command each player to pick a toy car as his playing piece. Have the players place their toy cars at the start of the maze. Direct the players to roll one die to determine who will go first. The player with the highest roll goes first. Instruct the players to alternate turns until one player moves her playing piece (her toy car) through the maze exit.
