Forensic Science Teaching Resources

Teaching forensic science is no small feat. It requires an understanding not only of science, computers or psychology, but also of the legal and criminal justice system. For those making the transition from practicing as forensic scientists to teaching, or for teachers who don't have a background in the field, there are many useful resources available online.
  1. Teaching the Basics

    • Lots of new students of forensic science might know of the career through a television show like "CSI," or from detective novels. Forensic Science Online is a great website where you can find basic information about many elements of the discipline of forensic science.

At Forensic Science Online, you'll find a history of the profession, and links to many other sources for information. This site is useful as an introduction to the field, where students can access information about forensic science in plain language.

    Professional Associations

    • Professional associations of forensic scientists have a variety of tools available for students and teachers. The American Association of Forensic Scientists offers a searchable database for members looking for the latest in peer-reviewed science about the discipline --- a key resource for educators.

It also offers resources for students as they move toward the job market. While the American Association of Forensic Scientists is the largest of all forensics organizations, there are links to dozens of other professional organizations available on their website. Through local chapters of these organizations, you may be able to have guest speakers come in and address your classroom.

    Books, Videos and Websites

    • PBS provides a series of videos free online that can be of use to people teaching forensic science. It also suggests a number of popular books on the subject that can be requested through your school library. The videos are suitable for youth and adults, and are useful classroom tools to talk about the sometimes gruesome realities of the work of a forensic scientist.

    Lesson Plans

    • If you're scrambling to put together a lesson plan, the Forensic Science Lesson Plans website may be just what you were looking for. It includes worksheets, student and teacher notes, information on themes and exercises, prepared by students and teachers from the University of Iowa. You can find out more about workshops in your area and access resources to help you plan your forensics classes through the Chemistry Collaborations, Workshops, and Communities of Scholars group.
