Postgraduate Courses in Forensic Science

Forensic science applies science to legal matters and covers many diverse fields, including chemistry, physics, biology, social science theory and law. Postgraduate study offers diverse education that can prepare you for a range of opportunities. In the U.S., the Forensic Science Education Program Accreditation Commission has accredited 11 postgraduate master degree programs in forensic science.

    • Arcadia University in Glenside, Pennsylvania, offers a Master of Science in Forensic Science Program in partnership with the Forensics Mentors Institute of the Fredric Rieders Family Renaissance Foundation and NMS Labs, a forensic science lab. All courses meet the guidelines of the DNA Advisory Board, the Scientific Working Group for the Analysis of Seized Drugs and the American Board of Forensic Toxicology. The program combines academic classes with research, internships, and other firsthand forensic science activities. Courses include Survey of Forensic Science, Forensic Medicine, General Principles of Pharmacology, and Law, Evidence and Procedure.

    Florida International University

    • The International Forensic Research Institute at the Florida International University in Miami offers a Master of Science in Forensic Science that requires of a minimum of 32 credits, including a thesis based on original research. The core courses of the program are forensic chemistry, forensic biology and forensic analysis. Other courses include forensic evidence, chemical explosives and advanced chromatography.

    Michigan State University

    • Michigan State University offers a Forensic Science Master's program that gives students a broad background while also letting the student choose one of three concentrations: forensic chemistry, forensic biology or forensic anthropology.

      Within forensic chemistry, the courses include Law and Forensic Science, Forensic Analysis of Drugs and Alcohol and Forensic Chemistry and Microscopic Evidence. Within forensic biology, the courses include Molecular Biology, Forensic Serology and DNA Profiling. Within forensic anthropology, the courses include Biocultural Evolution, Physical Anthropology and Human Osteology.

    University of California at Davis

    • The University of California at Davis offers a research-oriented Master of Science in Forensic Science designed for both working professionals and regular graduate students. The coursework includes the theoretical underpinnings of the biological and physical sciences as used in collecting, analyzing and interpreting evidence. The program offers the option of choosing a focus and taking classes from many different areas, including fire and arson investigation, accident reconstruction, DNA analysis, forensic statistics, scene investigation, toxicology and trace analysis.
