What Is Required for a Masters Degree in Physical Therapy?

To attain a master's degree in physical therapy, students have to go through several stages before becoming a licensed physical therapist in their state of choice.
  1. Bachelor's Degree

    • Students have to acquire a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university before applying. An enrollee's degree can be in any field to obtain a master's in PT.

    Grade Point Average

    • Although the minimum GPA for a bachelor's degree is 2.0, prospective students must have the appropriate course work in biology and science with an average GPA of 3.0 in those classes.

    Admission Process

    • The admission process consists of taking the Graduate Records Exam (GRE), providing letters of recommendation and a written essay and completing an interview with the admissions committee.

    Curriculum

    • The majority of universities require students to take over 90 hours or coursework. Courses include research in PT, practicum, physical therapy management, physical diagnosis and medical lectures.

    Clinical

    • After the required coursework is completed, students will have to perform supervised clinical sessions at a licensed doctor's office or hospital.

    Thesis/Comprehensive Exam

    • Students will either apply a thesis or take a comprehensive exam to graduate with a master's degree in physical therapy. Both projects focus on the material learned over the course of the program.
