How to Identify My Learning Style

There are many theories about learning styles, but the most common and easiest to understand say that there are three different styles. People learn by using their senses, so the three principal learning styles are visual, auditory and kinesthetic/tactile. In other words you learn by seeing, hearing or touching. You can determine your style by thinking about what your preferences are in different situations. If you agree with most of the statements under one of the styles, you probably learn best using that sense.

To determine whether you are a visual learner, ask yourself whether you agree or disagree with the following statements.

When I sit in a classroom, church service or theater I prefer to sit in the front so I can see better.

When I build something, I need to see pictures or diagrams.

When I am told how to do something, I remember it better when I take notes.

When I go somewhere new, I need a map to find it.

To determine whether you are an auditory learner, ask yourself whether you agree or disagree with the following statements.

When communicating with someone at a distance, I prefer the telephone to e-mail.

When reading instructions, I read out loud.

When given an assignment, I prefer to work with others.

When I listen to music, I tend to hum along.

To determine whether you are a kinesthetic learner, ask yourself whether you agree or disagree with the following statements.

When learning how something works, I like to take it apart.

When I am required to sit for a long time, I have a hard time paying attention.

When I see something interesting, I want to touch it to learn more about it.

When I listen to music, I tap my feet.
