How to Write a Presentation for Continuing Education Credit for Nurses

In order to become a nurse you must complete at least between nine months and two years of post-secondary academic training. Once you have earned a certification or a degree in nursing you must pass state licensing exams in order to receive state certification and work as a nurse. In many states, once a nurse receives her state licensure, she must continue to take additional academic classes on an ongoing basis in order to retain her license. Such courses are known as continuing educational credits. A presentation on the subject can help nurses best sort out their options.

Instructions

    • 1

Write up a description of continuing nursing education credits. A description should include the various types of credits available to members of your audience. A nurse may be able to satisfy requirements by taking additional credits in her specialty. She may also be able to meet such requirements by earning credit in a related field or even one where she is pursuing additional academic pursuits.

    • 2

Indicate the necessary requirements in your state. Each state is free to set the kind of continuing educational requirements state officials prefer. Some states, such as Arizona, Colorado and Connecticut, do not mandate any continuing education requirements at all. Other states, such as Delaware, Florida and Iowa mandate completion of a certain number of credit within a specific time frame.

    • 3

Define terms. Continuing education credits are defined in terms of hours earned. An hour is considered 60 minutes spent in education-related activities. Describe how they should submit documentation to the state of the courses they attended, to ensure proper credit is acknowledged by the state.

    • 4

Tell listeners where they can get such credits. Nurses have many different options to get continuing academic credits. They may choose to take a course online, one that meets on hospital grounds, or one that is supervised by a local school of nursing or community college. Nurses should investigate carefully and find a course that meets their needs and state requirements.

    • 5

Describe the coursework involved. Make sure that listeners know exactly what counts as a continuing course and what does not. Most states do not count duties performed during the day as part of a nurse's education. Coursework is typically geared towards state mandates such as those concerning AIDS prevention, or courses that are designed to help a nurse increase her fund of knowledge.
