Origins of Strayer University

Strayer University is an accredited university offering both bachelor's and master's degrees. Strayer University is owned by Strayer Education, Inc., which is based in Arlington, Virginia. Strayer University has focused on teaching working adults since its foundation in 1892.
  1. Origin

    • The University began as Dr. S. Irving Strayer's "Strayer's Business College of Baltimore City" in 1892, according to the Strayer Education website. A license to grant Bachelor of Science degrees in 1969 accompanied the school's renaming to Strayer College; a license to grant Master of Science degrees followed in 1987. In 1998, the school moved to its current name, Strayer University.

    Campus Expansion

    • By 2009, Strayer University had grown to include more than 70 campuses throughout the eastern and southern United States, as well as online courses.

    Current State

    • Sondra Stallard became Strayer's 13th president in 2008. Today, over 54,000 students are enrolled at the school.

    Military History

    • Strayer University helps military members and their families earn degrees.

      As a Servicemembers Opportunity College for the past 20 years, Strayer has helped U.S. military members achieve college degrees despite their frequent travel obligations.
