How to Prepare a Lesson Plan to Teach Spanish

More than 500 million people across the world speak Spanish as their native language. There is something very rewarding about having the ability to communicate with people from another country and culture, and as a Spanish teacher, you are in a position to equip your students to experience the thrill of such a cross-cultural experience. When you create a lesson plan for a Spanish class, consider the needs, level and interests of your students as well as the requirements of the institution where you teach.

Instructions

    • 1

Identify the objective for your lesson. Write down one or two sentences outlining exactly what you plan to teach. Take into consideration any curriculum requirements of your school. Try to write your objectives as clearly and specifically as possible. Some possible lesson objectives are to teach your students articles for masculine and feminine nouns in Spanish, and to review the differences between the verbs "ser" and "estar." They both translate as "to be" in English but have different uses in Spanish.

    • 2

Research ideas for student-centered activities that would fulfill your lesson objectives. Use the Internet and any available resources from your school to come up with as many activity ideas as possible. This will make the process of putting together a complete plan much easier. Possible activities include watching a clip from a Spanish novella, conducting a class survey in Spanish, or playing Spanish vocabulary bingo.

    • 3

Select a simple activity from your list as an introduction to your lesson. The beginning of a Spanish lesson is an appropriate time for language-input activities such as listening and reading.

    • 4

Continue selecting activities until you have enough material to fill your allotted class time. Choose one or two backup activities in case you have extra time. Select one or two activities from your plan that could be left out if time is tight. Remember to rank the activities from simple to complex.

    • 5

Make a list of the materials that your lesson will require. Prepare the necessary materials ahead of time and make photocopies of any handouts for each student in the class. Lay out your materials in the Spanish classroom in the order in which you will need them.
