How to Teach Spanish to a Preschooler

Learning a second language is beneficial because it improves kids' native language skills. It also could help develop students' cognitive thinking skills. The American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages recommends that foreign language should be part of every curriculum in prekindergarten through high school classes. Because Spanish is widely spoken in the United States, as well as throughout the world, choose to teach your preschoolers this language by introducing them to key words throughout the school year.

Instructions

    • 1

Look around your classroom. Choose a few objects or items that are familiar to your preschool students and used on a daily basis. Examples might include a table or book. Make a list of the objects you want your preschoolers to learn in Spanish.

    • 2

Use a Spanish dictionary to look up the Spanish word for each item. For example, for book, you would write "libro" next to the English word on your list.

    • 3

Write each Spanish word on its own sentence strip. Laminate the sentence strips to ensure they last throughout the school year.

    • 4

Bring your preschool class together and show them the Spanish word for the day written on the sentence strip. For example, you might show them the word "libro." Tell your class that "libro" is the Spanish word for book. Say this word and ask the class to repeat it at least three times.

    • 5

Choose one student to take the sentence strip with the word "libro" and place it on any book in the classroom. Ask the class to say the word as the student places it on the book. This helps preschoolers make the association between the Spanish word and the familiar object.

    • 6

Send the students back to their desks and ask every student to add this word to his own Spanish dictionary. He should draw or color a picture of the object and you should help each student write the Spanish word on the same page. Place each entry in a binder or folder and add to this dictionary each time you introduce a new Spanish word. Allow students to use this dictionary throughout the school year.

    • 7

Repeat this process on a daily basis and choose a new word each day. This process helps students learn the meaning as well as read a variety of Spanish words. Be sure to review old words and try to use the Spanish version of the words that have been learned during your daily preschool routines.
