Marine Safety Courses in the UK

Whether you're an experienced skipper or a newcomer to the boating life, marine safety plays a crucial role. This is nowhere more evident than in the United Kingdom with its 7,723 miles of coastline and complex, unpredictable weather patterns. It's hardly surprising that the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI)--the charity which safeguards our shores--is involved in the rescue and safe return of more than 7,000 lives each year.

Certificate in Marine Safety and Survival (Basic STCW95)

    • Hypothermia is just one marine safety topic covered by the Basic STCW95.

Flying Fish Training--located on the Isle of Wight--is accredited by the UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency to deliver all elements necessary for this basic marine safety qualification. This six-day course has four modules. Elementary first aid teaches appropriate, immediate responses to common on-board emergencies, including CPR. A module covering sea survival looks at the danger of hypothermia, life rafts and other tools available. Personal safety and social responsibilities covers the importance and methods of communication and touches on ethical issues affecting marine safety. Hazard awareness and extinguishing shipboard fires is also taught in a module examining fire safety.
