The EI School of Professional Makeup offers a year-long program in the artistry of makeup, where students combine classroom learning with hands-on training, theater trips and guest speakers. Topics include theatrical and live performance makeup, makeup for television (including makeup for high definition TV), corrective makeup, high-fashion makeup, and makeup for film. Other options include a course in special effects, such as making molds, life casting, sculpting techniques, and application of prosthetics. While enrolled, students may take advantage of EI's library of makeup collections, career assistance, and help finding nearby housing. Financial aid is available through loans, grants, and work study.

Students at the David Nicholas Makeup Artist school may take a program in the theatrical concentration, with coursework including aging techniques, classic and fantasy makeup, bullet holes, perspiration, white face, animal morphing techniques, artificial skin, facial hair construction, how to create celebrity look-alikes, and prosthetic alteration of anatomy. Licensed by the Board of Cosmetology, David Nicholas trains students one on one, customizing the schedule to fit in with the student's work or time requirements, including classes at night or on the weekends. Coursework results in a makeup artist portfolio, commemorative certificate, and professional makeup artist brush set.

The Lia Schorr Institute offers a 35-hour course in advanced theatrical makeup, including information on joining a theatrical union. Topics consist of applying a bald cap, special effects (bruises, cuts, burns), and adding hair. Students may choose to attend in the evening (the program lasts for 12 weeks) or on Saturday afternoons (the program lasts for 7 weeks). The program requires a prerequisite course in basic makeup, which the school also offers (depending on days and times attended, the basic courses lasts between two and 10 weeks) covering makeup application for the theater, artificial eyelash application, how brushes are made, color blending, highlighting, and sanitation.
