How to Get a Teacher Certification in NYS

There are four types of education certifications in New York state: initial, professional, provisional and permanent. Teachers need the initial certificate and then can progress to the professional certificate. Pupil personnel professionals use the provisional certificate and progress to the permanent certificate. These individuals do not teach, but work as child care professionals such as aides or in day care settings. An initial certificate requires the completion of training, passing a certification exam and completing a fingerprint-supported criminal history check. This certificate is valid for five years. The professional certificate remains valid as long as continuing education requirements are met.
