How to Get a BLS Certification in California

If you work in the medical field, employers will often encourage you to get basic life support, or BLS, certification. BLS training certifies you to perform CPR, help a choking person and know how to react in other emergency medical situations. BLS training helps keep a patient alive until advanced life support (ALS) can be administered. Training for this certification only takes four-and-a-half hours and the class can be taken in person or online. Once you pass the course and receive your California certification card, you must renew it every two years.

Find a BLS course taught in your area. The American Heart Association posts a list of available classes on their website. This four-and-a-half hour session will teach you life support techniques through hands-on activities and lectures. After completing the course, you will be given your BLS certification card. The price will vary depending on where you take the class.

If you don't have a chance to attend a live session, take an online class. The American Heart Association offers classes online. Once you register, you can read the study materials and watch the videos at your own pace. Once you've completed the online component, you must find a local AHA BLS instructor in order to practice your skills. You will go over rescue techniques studied in the online component and have the opportunity to ask questions. The cost of meeting with this instructor will vary depending on where you go. Your next step is to complete a skills test and receive your certification card. The cost of the online course as of 2010 is $17.50.
