AARP offers an annual scholarship grant to women over age 40 who want to improve their job skills through training at a technical or traditional school. Grants range from $500 to $5,000 and are calculated based on need and the cost of tuition. Preference is given to women who are raising grandchildren, women who do not have the opportunity to excel in their careers and women who have been out of the work force for an extended time. Application is made directly through the AARP Foundation.

AARP's Training Assistance Program (TAP) is available only in certain areas of the country where AARP provides Work Search Programs. Applicants must be over 40; earn less than the median income for workers in their location; and seek to train in a career that is listed in AARP's Work Search Program.
Adviser-led training is part of the TAP program. Each student works with an adviser to develop a course of training that will allow him to accomplish his career goals. The training is conducted through online courses in conjunction with the National Business Services Alliance, which provides university certification for course completion.

Community training through the AARP TAP program is regional training that occurs in or near one of the AARP Work Search Program locations. It consists of qualified students working with local trainers to complete courses online, through community colleges, at vocational schools or at adult education centers.

On-the-job training is also part of the AARP TAP program. Students are assigned to work with employers in their communities to develop job skills and demonstrate their ability to perform job-related tasks. Once the program is completed, the job seeker can provide evidence of work experience in the chosen field to other prospective employers.
