Most vocational schools and colleges require a high school diploma or GED as a prerequisite for admission. Some programs require previous patient care experience.
Coursework will include theory and hands-on work. You will study human anatomy, blood and cell composition, venipuncture, CPR and medical safety. You will be trained in how to handle bio-hazardous materials, syringes of different sizes, dermal puncture devices, and tourniquets.
Interpersonal skills are also critical for a successful blood draw. Whether you are practicing drawing blood during training or working with a patient during your career, the combination of your honed technical skills and empathetic manner will result in the most pleasant experience possible for you and your patient.
