Therapeutic Phlebotomy Training

Therapeutic phlebotomy involves drawing blood from patients who have hemochromatosis, which leads to too much iron being absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. The length of training programs in this field span from one to four years. You can obtain a diploma from a vocational school, or an associate or bachelor's degree from a college.
  1. Prerequisites

    • Most vocational schools and colleges require a high school diploma or GED as a prerequisite for admission. Some programs require previous patient care experience.

    Coursework

    • Coursework will include theory and hands-on work. You will study human anatomy, blood and cell composition, venipuncture, CPR and medical safety. You will be trained in how to handle bio-hazardous materials, syringes of different sizes, dermal puncture devices, and tourniquets.

    Other Considerations

    • Interpersonal skills are also critical for a successful blood draw. Whether you are practicing drawing blood during training or working with a patient during your career, the combination of your honed technical skills and empathetic manner will result in the most pleasant experience possible for you and your patient.
