Phlebotomy Training Checklist

The phlebotomy course is used to certify individuals in the task of venipuncture and blood draw. Each course is given in conjunction with training guidelines established by the state health authority. The establishment of a phlebotomy course requires extensive research along with experience in health-care-related training. The use of training aids, training materials and the management of a training area are a few of the concerns facing course organizers.
  1. Course Outline

    • The phlebotomy training course should be organized by use of a training outline. The training outline identifies the parameters of the course to include the curriculum, objectives, examinations and the course completion criteria. Copies of the training outline can also be kept for record keeping and use in completing potential course updates. Each course participant should receive a copy of the outline prior to the start of training to serve as an overview.

    Training Aids

    • Each course should make use of the proper training aids. Training aids are the devices or materials used in the demonstration or performance of training tasks. Phlebotomy training aids can include the use of disposable 2-by-2 gauze, surgical tape, 22-gauge needles, alcohol prep pads and anatomical aids such as rubber arms and torsos. Training aids should be controlled by hand receipt and properly stored to protect against theft or damage.

    Training Space

    • An adequate amount of space must be available to accommodate both classroom and hands-on training. The space must also safely accommodate class sizes that generally range between five and 25 students. A designated training space should also display the proper fire safety requirements such as fire extinguishers and emergency escape route signs. The training space should also carry the appropriate electrical outlets as many courses include the use of electronic equipment such as televisions, computers, slide projectors and VCRs. Windows, doors, vents and climate-control devices should be in working order as the room temperature might require periodic adjustment.

    Training Materials

    • Phlebotomy course training can include the use of textbooks, workbooks, videotapes, audio recordings, paper and writing utensils. Each course should provide the adequate amount of materials for initial issue and replacement if needed. Guidelines for use should be established in the course outline as some course materials might be reused during future courses. Each participant should be made responsible for the upkeep of assigned material, and bear the responsibility of returning the material in serviceable condition upon completion or discontinuation of the course.

    End-of-Course Credentialing

    • The completion of the training should be indicated with the receipt of an item commemorating the event. A certificate of completion, whether given in person, by postal mail or by electronic mail, is usually presented following successful completion of the final examination. This form can be used for either state certification requirements or personal record keeping.
