SABC First Aid Training

First aid is comprised of both simple and life-saving medical interventions administered as an interim measure until an individual can access medical treatment. SABC, or Self Aid and Buddy Care, is a compilation of first aid techniques used in the field by the U.S. Air Force.
  1. Course

    • The U.S. Air Force requires all members, including reservists and Air Guard members, to undergo a four-hour SABC training course. The only exclusion from this requirement is individuals classified as medical personnel or pararescue personnel.

    Curriculum

    • The program is designed to keep participants current with emergency first aid procedures. The course teaches basic life-saving and limb-saving measures that can be used on injured military personnel in the field. Students learn to use emergency bandages, tourniquets, rehydration solutions, water purification agents and quick-clotting hemostatic agents.

    Certification Period

    • The training course is valid for a period of up to 24 months after completion. Following that time, military personnel must renew the SABC first aid training. A refresher course is required no later than every 24 months throughout the duration of an individual's service.
