The U.S. Air Force requires all members, including reservists and Air Guard members, to undergo a four-hour SABC training course. The only exclusion from this requirement is individuals classified as medical personnel or pararescue personnel.
The program is designed to keep participants current with emergency first aid procedures. The course teaches basic life-saving and limb-saving measures that can be used on injured military personnel in the field. Students learn to use emergency bandages, tourniquets, rehydration solutions, water purification agents and quick-clotting hemostatic agents.
The training course is valid for a period of up to 24 months after completion. Following that time, military personnel must renew the SABC first aid training. A refresher course is required no later than every 24 months throughout the duration of an individual's service.
