Microsoft MOS Certification Training

Microsoft Office Specialist, or MOS, training provides participants with a certificate showing proficiency in one or more Microsoft Office programs on Windows operating systems. MOS training is directed toward information workers and students.
  1. Types

    • MOS training is currently offered for Microsoft Office programs through 2007, as well as for Word and Excel 2010. Still in development is MOS training for the 2010 versions of PowerPoint, Outlook, Access and SharePoint.

    Significance

    • The MOS certification, when completed, shows that the learner has achieved proficiency by meeting performance standards that are recognized globally. According to the Microsoft Learning website, people who earn MOS certification have a higher earning potential due to increased productivity, competence and credibility among employers, clients and coworkers.

    Features

    • MOS training is completed via pretests given on the Web, certification exams, and step-by-step books published by Microsoft Press. Those who earn certification gain access to a website through which they can print their transcripts and the certificate showing exam completion. Certificate holders are also authorized to place a certification logo on their business materials and/or resumes.

    Master Certification

    • Passing the following four exams qualifies a learner for Microsoft Office 2010 Master Certification: Word 2010 Expert, Excel 2010 Expert, PowerPoint 2010, and Outlook 2010 or Access 2010. Not all of these exams are available yet, as some 2010 exams are still in development. Once the exams are complete, learners must pass the sequence of exams described here to earn Master Certification.

    Training Materials and Exams

    • Training materials allow students to learn and practice the skills necessary to pass each exam. Training materials are available for all Microsoft Office products through 2007 and for Windows Vista; training materials are available for Word and Excel 2010 and are in development for other Microsoft 2010 programs.

Click the respective exam number on the MOS Certification site to gain access to the training materials. For links showing available classes, instructor-led and self-paced training, and practice-test providers, click the "Preparation" tab on the MOS Certification site.

The Certiport website allows learners to locate the testing center(s) nearest their Zip code. Some students and faculty, as well as support staff for academic institutions, may be eligible for up to 55 percent off the retail price of each exam.
