How to Remove a Thumb Spica Splint

One of the biggest challenges with hand injuries is properly immobilizing the injured digits. In order to separate and immobilize the thumb, one of the best options is the thumb spica splint. It can be handmade or purchased, but either type is essential for temporary immobilization of injured thumbs. When the time comes to remove a thumb spica splint, it can be done in a few steps with the right technique.

  1. Removing a Manufactured Splint

    • 1

      Lay the arm with the thumb spica splint on a flat surface.

      Remove the closures around the wrist. These are most often Velcro but some thumb spica splints have lacings which tie the splint closed.

      Remove the Velcro closures around the hand.

    • 4

      Remove the Velcro closures around the thumb. Work carefully, as this is generally the most injured area for which thumb spica splints are used.

      Remove the hand from the thumb spica splint.

    Removing a Handmade Splint

      Lay the arm with the thumb spica splint on a flat surface.

      Cut away the bandages with bandage scissors, starting with the arm and work towards the thumb until all the bandages are cut away. Avoid any rigid parts or supports in the thumb spica splint.

    • 8

      Remove the hand from the thumb spica splint.
