Power Systems High Voltage Training

Training is provided for electricians working with high voltage power systems through courses and apprenticeships under the auspices of electricity suppliers and suppliers of power system products.
  1. High Voltage

    • Apprenticeships provide experience with equipment between 13,000 and 500,000 volts. For example, Bonneville Power Administration, a federal agency based in the Pacific Northwest, offers a four-year training program with large high voltage equipment such as circuit breakers and power transformers.

    Product Training

    • Companies producing high voltage equipment for large power systems provide training on the specific products produced at dedicated training centers within manufacturing plants. For example, ABB --- a power and automation technology group headquartered in Zurich, Switzerland --- provides customers with training at centers in the U.S., Sweden and Germany.

    On-Site

    • Producers of high voltage products also provide training designed around the needs of each customer at the customer's work site. This training is based either on a specific piece of equipment or a broadly-based general training session, according to ABB.
